Alzheimer's Association Holds Memory Walk Committee Meeting
The Alzheimer's Association will hold a Memory Walk Commmittee Meeting on Monday, July 13th 3:30 PM at Lehigh Commons!

Special Guest: Adam Recke and his family! Adam's dad, Sean will talk to our Committee about the Walk and what this local family is facing! We have asked the family to have Adam as our "Honored Guest" at this Year's Memory Walk..... and they have agreed! Adam Recke is a 4th grade student at Farmersville Elementary School in Bethlehem Township. He was diagnosed with Type C Niemann-Pick Disease (Childhood Alzheimer’s)...Adam's nowhere near 65, the age at which the risk of dementia starts to zoom.
Some of you may have never heard of Niemann-Pick Type C, or NPC .....
Did you know that kids with NPC lose their ability to walk, talk or even to remember the name of a favorite stuffed animal??
This incurable disease, which afflicts about 500 children in the USA, has been called the pediatric version of Alzheimer's, a disease that afflicts 4.5 million people — most of them seniors — in the nation today.
Alzheimer's is thought to be caused by abnormal brain deposits, almost identical to the deposits seen in children with NPC, says NPC researcher Steven Walkley of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. Children who live long enough with NPC also can develop dementia, he says.
"A lot of us think that if we could really understand NPC, maybe it would help us understand Alzheimer's," he says. Consider coming out to find what this family is facing and how the Alzheimer's Association plans to work with them!

Knowledge and Skills Needed for Dementia Care
As discussed in the latest issue of Quality Care/Quality Jobs, distributed by PHI, an updated dementia care guide has been released by the Michigan Dementia Coalition.
The guide is free to the public.
Knowledge and Skills Needed for Dementia Care: A Guide for Direct Care Workers in Everyday Language helps direct-care workers determine whether they have the skills they need to deliver person-centered dementia care. It also tells the potential Direct Care Worker where to go for assistance if they need training.
The updated version includes: an overview of the primary diseases that may cause dementia symptoms, top ten warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related diseases, a description of structures of the brain, and a glossary of words used in the text.
Copies (pdf) of the new version may be downloaded free from the Michigan Dementia Coalition website. For hard copies, contact Lorie Massuch at lmassuch@mphi.org or (517) 324-7320.

18% of All Boomers Expected to Develop Alzheimer's
According to an article in March 18th's USA Today, "about 14 million, or roughly 18% of the USA's 79 million baby boomers can expect to develop Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia in their lifetime." This is an increase over what had previously been expected. As the article goes on to explain, "Americans are developing Alzheimer's at an accelerating rate."
This, of course, means more Direct Care Workers will be needed to fill future vacancies.
Yet, there are already massive Direct Care Worker shortages across the country. The 2004 Pennsylvania Long-Term Care Workforce Surveys report, a report to the PennsylvaniaIntra-Governmental Council on Long-Term care, found that the average vacancy rate among all providers was 9.2 percent... in 2004!
As the number of baby boomers continue to age and the rate of dementia increase, the need to focus on strategies to increase recruitment and retention of the Direct Care Workforce will become increasingly imperative.
This, of course, means more Direct Care Workers will be needed to fill future vacancies.

Coach Broyles' Playbook
The Lehigh Valley Chapter of the PA Direct Care Workers met on Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 at the United Way Building.
The group discussed a number of items, including this blog.
One member shared that she clicked on the Coach Broyles' Playbook for Alzheimer's Caregivers link at the right. She ordered several copies of the playbook and felt it was an excellent resource for families of newly diagnosed clients, as well as Direct Care Workers themselves. Up to three copies of the books will be sent to requesters FREE OF CHARGE by the Alzheimer's Association. Click the link to order your copies today!
